Witness A Yellow-banded Worker Bumble Bee Emerging

Wildlife Preservation Canada is one of the environmental organizations we proudly support, and their work is making a significant impact. They are at the forefront of critical efforts such as butterfly preservation and pioneering innovations to save endangered species, with a special focus on the Canadian Bumble Bee.

One of their key projects involves the yellow-banded bumble bee, listed as a species of special concern in Canada. At their bumble bee lab in Southern Ontario—the only facility in the world—they are developing groundbreaking conservation breeding and release techniques to prevent these vital pollinators from going extinct. WPC’s dedicated team closely monitors their progress.

Recently, Ameera Saleh, a WPC Bumble Bee Lab Technician, captured incredible footage of a worker bee emerging from her cocoon. This rare moment, where sister workers assist by removing the cocoon fragments, reveals the intricate and cooperative nature of bumble bee colonies—a vital aspect of their survival.

The conservation efforts have been unprecedentedly successful. The at-risk yellow-banded bumble bees under WPC’s care have produced a record-breaking 131 queens, marking a significant milestone in the fight to conserve endangered bumble bee populations.

Beyond their direct impact on species preservation, WPC’s work also underscores the importance of biodiversity for overall ecosystem health. Bumble bees are crucial in pollinating many of the crops we rely on for food. By saving these bees, WPC is also safeguarding our food security and contributing to the stability of natural ecosystems.
